Recently, there’s been a large trend amongst employees for more flexible schedules. The nature of many people’s lives means they’re incredibly busy, between juggling work, family, and any other activities they’re involved in throughout the week. For employees, being able to keep flexible hours, or even work remotely, is considered a major job perk and makes finding balance in the rest of their lives much easier. While some people do not thrive with flexible work schedules, many others find it gives them the freedom they need to achieve the most in their lives and balance work and the rest of life.
First and foremost, for many employees, the ability to work from home or make their own hours allows them to find the times they’re most productive. Studies have shown that flexible schedules can greatly increase productivity for many workers. Everyone has different schedules for when they’re the most focused and successful; a standard 9-5 schedule does not work for everyone.
Lower employee turnover rate
Since many employees prefer flexible schedules, giving them the freedom to make their own schedules on their own time lowers your employee turnover rate. When employees feel in control of their schedules and jobs, they’re more satisfied with their jobs and it prevents employees from leaving the company because they feel like their daily schedule is too inflexible.
Ability to take care of family
For employees who have two working parents or are solely responsible for their children, but also have a job, it can be challenging to find time to handle emergencies or be available for important times in their kids’ lives. Giving employees the ability to change their schedules in order to meet the needs of their family leads to much happier employees and stronger family units.
Chance to pursue other interests
For some people, they continue their education even after they start working. Other people are involved in a variety of hobbies or want to participate in philanthropic work outside of their career. These pursuits can be difficult when you’re spending your entire day in an office, but if employers give workers the flexibility to work different hours or remotely, it makes it much easier to participate in meetings and organizations outside of the workplace.
Less use of resources
Finally, one of the benefits of flexible work schedules is that it allows companies to use less of their resources. When fewer employees work in the office, you’re using fewer computers and electricity. Some businesses even opt to have one day a week be a mandatory work remotely day, which allows them to not use any utilities for that day. Allowing employees flexibility in their schedules also cuts down on their own commuting costs and says time and energy.
